Topics & Speakers: 

  • 9:00-10:30  Recession and Depression: Coping Strategies in a Down Economy

    Mikaela Merrill, Psychologist, from Range Mental Health will identify some of the common mental health issues that develop in difficult economic and employment situations and to educate participants about coping strategies and tools to address those symptoms.
    1) People will learn to identify their own symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, especially those brought on by the shifts in the economy, and be able to recognize them in their employees.
    2) Participants will learn coping strategies, such as breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and thought stopping, as well as ways of minimizing the impact the negative economic situation has on their life.
    3) HR personnel will be able to take these tools back to their employers and teach these skills to co-workers/personnel as well learn how to deal with employees who exhibit these behaviors in the workplace.
     

  • 10:45-12:15 All You Need to Know About HSAs and FSAs

    Michelle Severson, Financial Advisor from Severson Financial Services, will review the benefits and limitations of HSA/FSA accounts for employers and employees. She will review the many aspects of health savings account including eligibility requirements, contributions. qualified and non-qualified medical expenses, rollover provisions, carryovers and tax treatments.  You will learn about the rules and regulations governing the various types of flexible spending accounts and see how tax advantages can benefit the company, as well as the employees.

  • 1:00-2:30 How Am I Doing? Performance Feedback

    Jim Laumeyer of Laumeyer Human Resource Solutions will present ways to gain a competitive advantage by giving feedback to your workforce. Your employees need it, want it, and will become more productive when they receive it.  Jim will emphasize:
    - The differences in Performance Appraisal and Performance Feedback
    - The need and value of Performance Feedback
    - Defining what a performance feedback system looks like
    - Skills needed to develop a performance feedback system, and giving feedback
    - Evaluation techniques for a new or existing system

     

  • 2:45-4:15  Managing RTW Programs in Difficult Economic Times: A Workers' Comp Perspective

Attorney Kathy Bray of Lynn, Scharfenberg & Associates, the corporate attorneys for SFM, will talk about the importance of return to work, the impact of return to work on workers’ compensation claims and exposures, light duty programs, effective and enforceable job offers, and how recent ADA changes affect return to work programs. This presentation will provide practical tips and current legal information concerning employers’ return to work programs. The discussion will focus on return to work from a workers’ compensation perspective, but will also include a discussion of how the recent changes to the Americans With Disabilities Act may impact an employer’s policies concerning return to work.
